With the just-announced revival of "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," it's looking like film and TV producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are becoming Broadway regulars.
Official confirmation of the spring 2011 production, to be toplined by Daniel Radcliffe, came during the preview period of the duo's current Main Stem offering, "Promises, Promises," gearing up for an April 25 opening.
Legit production and presenting org Broadway Across America, also a producer of "Promises," re-teams with Zadan and Meron for "How to Succeed." Rob Ashford, the director-choreographer of "Promises," will reprise those duties for the upcoming revival.
Radcliffe will star as J. Pierrepont Finch, the young man whose career rockets from the mailroom to the vice president's office thanks to some comedically iffy business practices. Thesp has previously appeared on Broadway in a 2008 revival of the play "Equus," but "How to Succeed" will be the first time he'll sing on the boards.
Radcliffe's star billing in "Equus" didn't draw quite enough crowds for that production to recoup, despite the actor's global fame from the "Harry Potter" franchise. But the familiar 1961 tuner "How to Succeed" would seem more likely to draw Radcliffe's younger fans than the psychologically dark "Equus."
"How to Succeed," one of the rare musicals to win the Pulitzer for drama, has a score by Frank Loesser that includes "I Believe in You" and "The Company Way." Abe Burrows, Jack Weinstock and Willie Gilbert penned the book, based on the self-help satire by Shepherd Mead.
"How to Succeed" was last seen on Broadway in a 1995 production helmed by Des McAnuff and toplined by Matthew Broderick and Megan Mullally, cast as the secretary who is Finch's love interest.
No further casting for the new staging has been announced. A reading held late last year starred Radcliffe and David Hyde Pierce, among others.
